I am inviting you to participate in the Relay For Life and be part ofthe fight against cancer within our communities. On June 1, 2012 at the Court House Square in Scranton, The Relay For Life of Scranton will remember and honor loved ones throughout the event 1. The Survivors Lap – an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. We also recognize and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer. 2. Luminaria Ceremony - After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. As well in every family, we all have a personal story to tell that affects each of us. Last, there is the Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes too much from us.
In my family cancer has claimed the lives of two very dear people in my family. The first was my uncle, godfather and friend, Jerry Brunori. He fought a goodfight but the cancer won. As it did to my cousin Pat Kelly and 5 year Tim Kelly Jr. But, for all those who have left a mark on us, we have much to be thankful, because in our families we also have survivors. First, my dad, Leo was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and is a survivor as well as my cousin Lisa. For each family there is a story to be told. Sometimes there are not always happy endings but there are many such stories. So in order to help fight this disease I ask you to please participate in this Event. Remember your loved ones who have passed but, be especially grateful for the loved ones who have survived, in all families, thanks to all the new discoveries and treatments, there is always hope. Support this event.
